Async is a utility module which provides straight-forward, powerful functions for working with [asynchronous JavaScript](http://caolan.github.io/async/global.html). Although originally designed for use with [Node.js](https://nodejs.org/) and installable via `npm install --save async`, it can also be used directly in the browser.
This version of the package is optimized for the Node.js environment. If you use Async with webpack, install [`async-es`](https://www.npmjs.com/package/async-es) instead.
For Documentation, visit <https://caolan.github.io/async/>
*For Async v1.5.x documentation, go [HERE](https://github.com/caolan/async/blob/v1.5.2/README.md)*
```javascript
// for use with Node-style callbacks...
var async = require("async");
var obj = {dev: "/dev.json", test: "/test.json", prod: "/prod.json"};
var configs = {};
async.forEachOf(obj, (value, key, callback) => {
fs.readFile(__dirname + value, "utf8", (err, data) => {
if (err) return callback(err);
try {
configs[key] = JSON.parse(data);
} catch (e) {
return callback(e);
}
callback();
});
}, err => {
if (err) console.error(err.message);
// configs is now a map of JSON data
doSomethingWith(configs);
});
```
```javascript
var async = require("async");
// ...or ES2017 async functions
async.mapLimit(urls, 5, async function(url) {
const response = await fetch(url)
return response.body
}, (err, results) => {
if (err) throw err
// results is now an array of the response bodies
console.log(results)
})
*
* If a final callback is specified, the task results are similarly injected,
*
* The autoInject function is purely syntactic sugar and its semantics are
* the form 'func([dependencies...], callback). The object's key of a property
* serves as the name of the task defined by that property, i.e. can be used
* when specifying requirements for other tasks.
* * The `callback` parameter is a `callback(err, result)` which must be called
* when finished, passing an `error` (which can be `null`) and the result of
* the function's execution. The remaining parameters name other tasks on
* which the task is dependent, and the results from those tasks are the
* arguments of those parameters.
* @param {Function} [callback] - An optional callback which is called when all
* the tasks have been completed. It receives the `err` argument if any `tasks`
* pass an error to their callback, and a `results` object with any completed
* task results, similar to `auto`.
* @example
*
* // The example from `auto` can be rewritten as follows:
* callback(null, 'data', 'converted to array');
* },
* make_folder: function(callback) {
* }
* }, function(err, results) {
* console.log('err = ', err);
* console.log('email_link = ', results.email_link);
* });
*
* // If you are using a JS minifier that mangles parameter names, `autoInject`
/**
* Reduces `coll` into a single value using an async `iteratee` to return each
* successive step. `memo` is the initial state of the reduction. This function
* only operates in series.
*
* For performance reasons, it may make sense to split a call to this function
* into a parallel map, and then use the normal `Array.prototype.reduce` on the
* results. This function is for situations where each step in the reduction
* needs to be async; if you can get the data before reducing it, then it's
* probably a good idea to do so.
*
* @name reduce
* @static
* @memberOf module:Collections
* @method
* @alias inject
* @alias foldl
* @category Collection
* @param {Array|Iterable|Object} coll - A collection to iterate over.
* @param {*} memo - The initial state of the reduction.
* @param {AsyncFunction} iteratee - A function applied to each item in the
* array to produce the next step in the reduction.
* The `iteratee` should complete with the next state of the reduction.
* If the iteratee complete with an error, the reduction is stopped and the
* main `callback` is immediately called with the error.
* Invoked with (memo, item, callback).
* @param {Function} [callback] - A callback which is called after all the
* `iteratee` functions have finished. Result is the reduced value. Invoked with
* (err, result).
* @example
*
* async.reduce([1,2,3], 0, function(memo, item, callback) {
* // pointless async:
* process.nextTick(function() {
* callback(null, memo + item)
* });
* }, function(err, result) {
* // result is now equal to the last value of memo, which is 6
* });
